The 30-year 1/2 cent sales tax would provide $68 million for rail trail construction and maintenance. This would allow for a majority of the trail to be built thereby greatly expanding safe, convenient, and direct biking in Santa Cruz County!

The sales tax also would provide some $63 million for rail corridor preservation and maintenance, in addition to contributing to the Pajaro train station and other improvements. It would not pay for rail transit but would allow the RTC to further analyze, study and answer community questions regarding future rail transit and technology options to determine the best use of this important asset to improve mobility for everyone.

There as been some misconception and incorrect information floating out in social media and other public forums regarding the viability of fitting a bike and walking path next to the railroad tracks. The Santa Cruz County Regional Transportation Commission (RTC), who owns the coastal rail corridor and is the lead on the rail trail project, has surveyed and studied the rail corridor width extensively. They have a concise fact sheet on this issue and on an update on the progress of the rail trail as 3 sections are funded and will be completed by 2018. We are getting 25% of our rail trail soon. The City and County of Santa Cruz are partnering to apply for a federal grant to build the Rail Trail from the east side of the San Lorenzo River to 17th Avenue. This section of trail parallels one of the most congested roads in Santa Cruz while traversing densely populated neighborhoods. It would allow families and seniors to safely bike and walk to Simpkins Swim Center, the soon-to-be-built Boys & Girls Club and would connect children to Shoreline Middle School, Gault, Del Mar ad Live Oak elementary schools. We need your help to show the US Department of Transportation the overwhelming support Santa Cruz has for the Rail Trail!
